Market Demand for Sustainable Systems Education

Representatives of leading companies with whom CSS has worked closely over the years have expressed a clear message that companies are becoming increasingly concerned with the life-cycle implications of their products and processes.

Many companies such as Alcoa, BASF, Daimler-Chrysler, Dow, Ford, General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Kodak, 3M and Xerox are implementing life cycle tools and programs.

These companies want and need their employees to have strong interdisciplinary foundations. The Certificate Program in Industrial Ecology is an extremely attractive complement to graduate degrees in Natural Resources, Engineering, Business, Public Health, and Public Policy.

Many professional societies are also beginning to actively support the development and application of life cycle methodologies in their workshops, conferences, and publications.

Engineering Sustainable Systems Dual Degree Program

This unique new program is the first in the world to offer a dual degree in both engineering and environmental science. Bringing together two of U-M's nationally recognized programs, it enables engineering students to graduate with both a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) and a Master of Science (MS) from the School of Natural Resources and the Environment.

It is a 54-credit program that requires approximately 2 to 2 1/2 years to complete. Students must be admitted to both the College of Engineering and the School of Natural Resources and the Environment.
