SNRE Undergraduate Curriculum

Solving the complex environmental problems of today requires experience beyond the traditional natural resources area. Students with varied backgrounds will now be able to get the best of both worlds, drawing on the resources of faculty expertise in environmental science, policy, and humanities across the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) and in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA).

In October of 2000 the Environmental Sciences/Studies Curriculum Committee recommended a plan for a new concentration in Environmental Sciences/Studies that would be offered as a collaboration between SNRE and LSA. The new Program in the Environment concentration offers a broader range of choices to all students, integrating SNRE's commitment to scientific literacy and environmental problem solving with LSA's breadth as an outstanding liberal arts institution.

This partnership underscores the multidisciplinary nature of environmental and natural resource issues and will integrate scientific and social scientific approaches in addressing environmental problems. At the core of the program is a commitment to combining breadth with depth, enabling students to contribute to the solution of real world environmental problems while fostering a sense of community among participants.

For more information about the Program in the Environment, please visit environment.snre.umich.edu, e-mail environment.program@umich.edu, or call (734) 764-6453.

The Center for Sustainable Systems contributes to undergraduate research and education through its application of quantitative methods to topics in sustainability.
