Research Interests

Biography
Jim Bean's background includes experience as a professor, academic administrator, fundraiser, and scholar. Before joining the Lundquist College of Business as dean in 2004, Bean was associate dean for academic affairs and professor of industrial and operations engineering at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. A graduate of Harvey Mudd College, Bean earned master's and doctoral degrees in operations research from Stanford University.

As associate dean at Michigan, Bean managed faculty hiring, promotion, and tenure, and the budget. He was also extensively involved in joint programs with the school of business and private industry, specifically co-directing the Joel D. Tauber Manufacturing Institute.

Bean's extensive scholarly record has been supported by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, National Science Foundation, Sloan Foundation, the U.S. Departments of Education and Transportation, AT&T Foundation, and a variety of private corporations and organizations. He is a fellow and past president of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.
